How Infrared Scanning Can Make You More Like Superman

Infrared Scanning imagery showing "hot spots" of energy. While Superman remains fictional, the power to see what the human eye cannot is very real. Infrared scanning technology puts Superman-like power directly into your hands and allows you to "see" heat radiation.  That kind of knowledge can make anyone seem “super-human.”

Cosmic Superman Power, Itty-bitty Effort

Based on the theory that energy flows from warmer to cooler areas, infrared scanning technology senses heat energy released by faulty contacts and overloaded equipment. It allows electrical maintenance teams to monitor and inspect systems and avoid down time, safety issues, and energy waste.

Adding infrared scanning to a preventative maintenance schedule, alerts you to critical issues within panelboards, motor controls, transfer and fused switches, busways, circuit breakers, and transformers. According to the folks at Electrical Construction & Maintenance (EC&M), the result is “high reliability with practical economy.”

" ... high reliability with practical economy."

Infrared Power in Action

No system is exempt from the Superman-style benefits of infrared technology. Regardless of age, any system is at risk of failure due to loose or weak connections. Even new equipment can be faulty. In either case, infrared scanning can help identify hot-spots before they cause expensive losses in productivity or energy.

The folks at EC&M recently posted a list of the “hottest” electrical issues for facilities. Is your facility at risk with any of these potential problems?

  • Breakers
  • Fuse Clips and Clamps
  • Bushing
  • Loose wiring
  • Switches and Switchgear
  • Power Feeds
  • Power Plant
  • Link Fuses
  • Solar panels
  • Transformer Connections

Reporting for Duty

Lemberg uses FLIR brand technology, which has a reputation for commercial excellence in Infrared Thermographic equipment. We’ll provide a complete report of findings, test standards and recommendations for the preventive maintenance and thermogram photos to document your maintenance as well.  We recommend scheduling infrared scans before peak heating and cooling seasons.
