Turn-key solutions and on-the-job forethought create high-end signage that is easy to maintain.

Background and Goals

The Lodge Kohler is a new hotel located in the heart of Green Bay, Wisconsin, just outside Lambeau Field. Boasting a sophisticated and spirited atmosphere, the hotel offers 134 guestrooms, 10 suites, a full-service spa, and a rooftop restaurant with views of the stadium. The hotel serves guests in town to see the popular Green Bay Packers or looking for a high-end get-away.

Mortensen Construction, general contractor for the Lodge Kohler project, needed a turn-key solution – design to installation -- for exterior and interior signage for the hotel as well as two restaurants and a spa located on the grounds. As with many new construction projects, the property was being developed as sign designs were being considered, manufactured and installed. Safety and communication were most important. Looking for designs that would highlight the elegance of the architecture and efficiently direct patrons, the Kohler design team wanted a partner who could bring the vision for the Kohler brand to life. Lemberg's sign and lighting division team were ready to fill that need.

Strategy/Approach

The Kohler design team sought a sign package with main Lodge Kohler brand signage in three locations on the building exterior, a fifth-floor railing sign for the “Tavern in the Sky” pub, signs for the new “Leaps & Bounds Café,” and halo-lit channel lettering for the Kohler Waters Spa.

Experts in Lemberg’s sign division set to work to determine the proper design, sizing, placement, and mounting of each sign. The Lemberg team carefully considered mounting plans for all concepts prior to presenting them to the Kohler group. Once the final sign designs were selected, permitting and manufacturing were implemented in stages beginning with main brand signage and followed by signs for the Waters Spa, Taverne in the Sky and Leaps & Bounds Café.

The team was soon challenged with the Waters Spa signage design concept. The original channel letter design was not going to work. The outline, or stroke, around the channel letters was too narrow to be fabricated and lit as designed. The Lemberg team conducted on-site inspections to survey the structure and determine the right solution. They wanted to be certain that a new design approach could be executed without issue.

Lemberg’s award-winning design team was diligent in trying to meet the high-end look and the intent that the Kohler group was looking for in the Waters Spa signage. The team collaborated with Kohler to understand their vision before suggesting translucent, push-through letters with opaque faces on a hinged wooden cabinet that behaves as an access door for easy maintenance. The letters were cut to size and backed with LEDs (light emitting diodes) to emit a soft glow at their perimeter, keeping the thin outline and still giving the desired halo-lit effect.

Results

Weather delays and the daily changes of ongoing building construction challenged the timeline for the electrical wiring and sign installation. Through strong communications with the general contractor, Lemberg worked through challenges and reached a realistically set timeline.

The Lodge Kohler construction site followed new OSHA regulations for silica dust. Lemberg’s technicians used HEPA vacuums during drilling into concrete and stayed in close contact with the Kohler Corporation and the general contractor on structural and installation safety measures.

Lemberg provided the Lodge Kohler with a custom designed exterior and interior sign package complete with permitting and installation.  Lemberg’s attention to detail in all stages of the project – design, engineering, fabrication – made for a final product that met the customer’s demand for attractive, high-end signage throughout the property. The team provided the Waters Spa with the halo-lit design the customer envisioned and met timeline and safety standards set by the general contractor. In turn, the site was prepared well for the sign installation. Because the teams on both sides were proactive in their planning, the signage was completed well before the location opened for business.

Impact

The Titletown Plaza is a 10-acre park designed to attract more than just football fans to Green Bay. The new Lodge Kohler will operate as a high-end accommodation option for area visitors throughout the entire year. Visitors will have no trouble finding the Lodge Kohler, which features well designed, easy-to-see brand signage for the hotel itself as well as its restaurant, café and spa. Within the building, visitors will find navigation simple. Wooden interior navigation signage was specially designed to not only provide great wayfinding but also blend in with décor and architecture.

This Lodge Kohler sign project serves as example of how a good relationship between the end customer, general contractor and the subcontractor can produce excellent results.
