Hagen's Hikes: Last Hikes of a Normal Season

Posted by E.V. Thompson on Jun 12, 2020

The heat of summer gave way to an early cool in the fourth quarter of 2019, when Service Managers Tim Hagen and Matt Schmidt continued their way to their goal of hiking the entire 1000 miles of Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail (IAT). Hagen hit his 300-mile mark in October and Schmidt, who began his goal a few hikes behind Hagen, hit his 100 miles in February 2020. The decent into the deep freeze of winter would mark another milestone, one that no one saw coming.

Hagen's Hikes: A Test of Skill, Tolerance and Mosquito Netting

Posted by E.V. Thompson on Oct 24, 2019

Wisconsin’s wet spring gave way to a hot and steamy summer challenging Service Manager Tim Hagen with some difficult hiking conditions that had less to do with terrain and more to do with terrestrial beings -- bugs, that is. Hagen was glad to have the company of Matt Schmidt also a service manager at Lemberg, for the summer hikes on his way toward the end of the 1000 miles of the Ice Age Trail.

With temperatures in the 80's and 90's and the usual Wisconsin high humidity, Hagen trekked over 114 miles of the state's lush countryside filled with picturesque farmsteads, winding trails and peaceful beaches. But not all of it was kind.

Posted by E.V. Thompson on Aug 6, 2019

Here’s another installment of Hagen’s Hikes, following the progress of Tim Hagen as he treks Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail on his way to the 1000 Mile Club. Hagen’s journey started last December when he walked 6.2 miles along some Waukesha County trails. Old Man Winter gave Hagen a few challenges, but he gave it right back. Here’s how he fared in spring.

Why Multitasking Is Not A Thing

Posted by E.V. Thompson on May 1, 2019

In a recent article on eight simple productivity hacks, Forbes reported that those who multitask are not necessarily more productive. In fact, they are more distracted by "irrelevant environmental stimuli." Pick your distraction: Insta updates, iPhone notifications, texts, email, phone calls, the open-door-pop-in chat or can-you-stop-what-you're-doing-to-help-me chat. That doesn't even begin to address open-area work environments where distractions hit just about every one of the senses. What's more is that those same multitaskers also perform worse in tests that measure the ability to switch tasks. WHAT?

Budget vs. Estimate: Why you need both for accuracy.

Posted by E.V. Thompson on Apr 22, 2019

Large construction projects can be tricky to estimate. The sheer volume of detail can create the perfect storm for overlooking things that should be obvious on the outset. To avoid an inaccurate estimate, our construction division uses a simple but effective tool.

The invitation is always open: join the weekend hike!

But, if you're going to tag along, make sure you wear good shoes and bring water because this is no casual hike. Lemberg Service Manager Tim Hagen has a goal to be recognized by Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail Alliance (IATA) as one of the few who have hiked the entire 1,000+mile Ice Age Trail -- and he's happy to have company along his journey, as long as you show up prepared.

But there was someone there who made our day just that much more special.

Anniversary Memory: Hard Hat History

Posted by E.V. Thompson on Jul 12, 2018

Your relationship with your hard hat should be a short one.

Throughout our 90th Anniversary year, we realize that the one thing that remains constant is change. From leadership and staff to our building and equipment, change requires us to be agile, innovative and sometimes simply compliant. That's especially true of the safety staple -- the hard hat.

Believe it or not, hard hats do expire. Just like any piece of equipment, safety equipment is consistently being upgraded as technology and materials get better. Located on the inside of your hard hat should be a manufacturer-stamped date which will be the date the hard hat was molded. Quick math tells you how long you should keep your trusty skull bucket.
