Franklin City Gateway Signs

Lemberg Signs and Lighting provided enhanced safety for the city of Franklin, a suburb southwest of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The city required new branded gateway signage at city limits in several locations along major thoroughfares. The team worked with authorities to satisfy requirements from local, state and federal organizations.

Where required, the signs were to have breakaway support bases designed to bend or break when hit by a vehicle. According to manufacturers, this breakaway feature reduces risks for injury and damage. The Federal Highway Association requires such features in certain areas referred to as "clear zones" -- areas of the road where drivers can regain control or come to a stop during roadway departures. Usually this is shoulders, slopes or run-out areas. There are several different types of breakaway signage supports, however the breakaway is generally accomplished by a post that slips and rotates off the base when struck.

The Franklin gateway signs were made from lightweight but durable 3mm thick aluminum composite with reflective printing and UV protected vinyl graphics. The sign faces are 5 feet by 10 feet in size. Due to the larger size of road signs, the team used I-beam steel posts, which allow the post to slip from the foundation and the sign to lift and the vehicle to pass beneath it. During the installation of the new signs and bases along these high traffic roads, the Lemberg team exercised extreme caution for the safety of the team as well as the drivers.

The city of Franklin enjoys ongoing economic and population growth, touting a strong business base, safe and friendly neighborhoods and high quality commerce. The infrastructure sports wide roads that support a variety of vibrant industrial, commercial, and residential traffic.
